Collagen Injection

Collagen injections are along the lines of botox treatments. Collagen injections improve the appearance of the skin through the injection of the collagen into the areas of the fine lines and wrinkles. These injections thereby improve the overall firmness and fullness of skin's appearance.

The practitioner injects the collagen just below the skin's surface. The injection raises the skin in the area of the wrinkle, which makes the wrinkle difficult to see if it is visible at all. The procedure is relatively simple and very effective.

There are few if any side effects from collagen injections. Some people may experience a little discomfort at the site of the injection along with some redness or swelling at the injection site. Choosing a practitioner with a great deal of experience in treating patients with injectables will help to ensure minimal risk from the procedure.

Collagen injections are not a permanent fix to fine lines and wrinkles on the skin. Collagen procedures last a few months, but patients will need to go back for additional collagen treatments as the lines begin to reappear on the skin.

There are two types of collagen that practitioners can inject. Zyderm and Zyplast are one type of collagen. Zyderm and Zyplast are bovine derived collagen compounds. Patients wanting to use Zyderm or Zyplast must have a skin test first to make they will not have an allergic reaction to the collagen compound after the practitioner injects it. The other type of collagen is Cosmoderm or Cosmoplast. Both Cosmoderm and Cosmoplast are bioengineered human collagen compounds. Cosmoderm and Cosmoplast do not require a skin test prior to the first treatment.

Collagen injections are effective and are becoming more and more affordable procedures. Though collagen does not provide the same results as a facelift, it can be a great alternative.
