Craniosacral Therapy

Craniosacral therapy is another form of alternative or complimentary medicine that is physical therapists, occupational therapists, naturopaths, osteopaths and chiropractors often employ to treat their patients. Craniosacral therapy is the careful manipulation of the neck, head and other areas surrounding the spine. The belief is that this manipulation helps distribute the cerebrospinal fluid more evenly and that it restores the proper rhythm of the cerebrospinal fluid flow.

Symptoms and conditions such as insomnia, migraines, TMJ syndrome, fibromyalgia as well as general head and neck pain and mental stress. Studies that would prove overall effectiveness of Craniosacral therapy have not been done. The studies that have been done to date do not support the underlying elements of craniosacral therapy and there is limited evidence to show the effectiveness of the treatment.

Craniosacral therapy is relatively simple to perform, but should only be done by therapist who specializes in Craniosacral therapy, as without proper treatment by professional, damage could be done. During the procedure patients are completely clothed lying down on their back. The therapist begins the manipulation of the patient from this position. A typical craniosacral therapy session last approximately one hour and is a ten-step process.

Therapists my not use all ten steps depending on the patient and the amount of time they have to complete the treatment session. Usually a therapist starts by determining the base cranial rhythm. After determining the base rhythm the therapists then begins one of the next steps which can be lengthening the spine in the lumbar sacral region, rocking the sacrum, addressing each of the cranial bones, releasing the hyoid bone in the throat and or addressing the pelvic, respiratory and thoracic diaphragms.

A patient participating in a craniosacral therapy treatment report feeling a deep relaxation during the session and immediately after the session is over.
