Dermaplaning

Dermaplaning is a procedure that involves removing the first layer of skin by carefully shaving off the first layer using a tool called a dermatome. The oscillating blade of the dermatome moves slowly back and forth across the skin to gently skim the first layer of skin off of the face. The process is ideal to reduce the appearance of deep acne scars or other more serious blemishes. While dermaplaning is an effective procedure for some people, dermaplaning does not remove all scars not does it prevent the aging. The true effectiveness of dermaplaning depends on the results the patient is trying to achieve. There are also other factors the can help in determining the effectiveness of the procedure. The other factors include medical history, skin type and the skin tone of a person all can help a practitioner manage a patient's expectations of the dermaplaning procedure.

Patients who have dermaplaning procedures can have the procedures in a surgery center or a hospital, but it is an out patient procedure. Same patients may prefer to have the treatment in a hospital, as there is a need for anesthesia during the procedure. However, some patients can proceed with dermaplaing using local anesthesia or numbing spray rather than general anesthesia.

The length of the procedure and the number of session depend on the size of the area that needs treatment. The procedure can last just a few minutes to an hour. Dermaplaning procedures may require only one treatment, but some patients prefer doing just one area of the skin at a time over the course multiple sessions. A person can have more than one session on the same area after waiting an appropriate length of time.

The possible side effects of dermaplaning procedures include red and swollen skin, scabbing, difficulty eating or talking for a few days after the procedure and tingling, burning or itching.
