Herbology

Most people know Herbology as herbalism. While herbology has many names, the meaning is still the same. Herbology is the study and practice of traditional or folk type medicine that involves use of plants and plant extracts as way of healing and maintaining the health of people.

The history of herbology dates back to over 5,000 years ago. Many different ancient cultures used various plants and flowers to treat illnesses. During the middle ages, monasteries became the centers of medical knowledge and their herb gardens became the source of many different treatments for common illnesses.

Today many of the top pharmaceuticals have a basis in herbology. The basic ingredients of many pharmaceuticals have roots in the plant and herb world. However, the World Health Estimates that beyond pharmaceuticals, nearly eighty percent of the world's population uses herbs and herbology for some form of their primary care medicine practice.

Herbology is not just using herbs and plants as medicine. Herbology also involves using herbs and plants that have healing properties or health benefits as part of a diet and lifestyle program. Just as plants have healing properties for use in medicine simply eating some herbs and plants can allow people to gain the use of their healing properties. Common properties from plants and herbs that when added to a person's diet are helpful include cinnamon and blueberries for antioxidants as well as various fruits and vegetables for their vitamins and minerals.

Composition of the herbs depends upon their method of extraction. Some methods produce stronger composition than others. Common methods of administration are seeping the herbs, as in tea, while other methods include topical applications such as with essential oils or inhaling the herbs using aromatherapy.

Overall, herbology is becoming more and more mainstream and is often put into use as a compliment to existing and traditional health care methods.
