Iridology

Iridology is the study of the irises as a way to learn about the body and the health of a person. Iridologists see the eyes as the windows to the body and believe that by studying the irises carefully they can learn a great deal about a person's systematic health.

People who practice this alternative form of medicine believe that the study of the patterns, colors and characteristics of a person's iris can help diagnose various conditions that a person may be suffering from. The charts helps those practicing iridology to determine which organs are healthy and which organs appear to be inflamed, distressed or overactive. According iridologist the understanding the characteristics of a person's irises can determine the person's likelihood to develop various illness and can also tell the iridologist which illnesses the person may have previously suffered from.

There are many tools that iridologists use to determine the patterns and characteristics of the eye and what they mean. Each of the various zones on an iris has a place on an iris chart. Each zone correlates to specific areas of the body and that is what iridologists work from. There are 80 to 90 zones on the average iris chart.

There are several forms of equipment that iridologists use to analyze the irises of their patients. Flashlights and magnifying glasses are the most common tools put into practice in iridology. Sometimes iridologists use cameras or slit-lamp microscopes in addition to their more common tools for the study of a patient's irises.

This alternative medicine practice is not as widely accepted as other forms of alternative medicine such as acupuncture and naturopathy. In the United States there are several organizations that offer certificates of study in iridology, but there are no official licenses from any government agencies that sanction the study of iridology.
